Joseph’s Award Night

This evening, most of my family converged on the CFSB Center on the Murray State University Campus. Unfortunately, Sean wasn’t with us since he was participating in his last track meet of the year in Paducah this evening.

It was band award night and we have attended this event for the past 5 years. The first 4 years, we have shown up to celebrate Zach’s achievements. Tonight, we gathered to celebrate Joseph’s achievements.

One of the decisions Kim and I made early in our boys’ education was to make it clear to them that they would participate in at least one extra-curricular activity every year they were in school. They couldn’t just go to school and then come home and sit. They had to have some activity that gave them an opportunity to broaden their horizons.

Zach chose the academic team, band, and a few other activities. Sean has been on the football team and track team among other things. Now, Joseph is in the band and exploring other possibilities.

Unfortunately, Joseph’s name was misspelled by the engraver. It will get fixed soon.

One of the many things I’ve told my boys for years is that when they get older, they look back on their years in our home, and realize just how much they achieved, they can thank their mom. Kim is a fighter. When she sees something that is worth giving her all, she will give every last ounce of effort she has. If it’s worth her time and effort, she doesn’t give up.

And she has passed that determination off to our boys.

Whatever the ceiling on their talent, they are pushing past their limitations because Kim has taught them not to give up. She has taught them that life can be tough and it’s typically what you make of it. She has consistently pushed them. While they sometimes resent it and resist it, they eventually give in. Deep down, I can’t help but think that they realize that she’s got their best interests at heart.

So, while we gathered to celebrate Joseph’s achievements this evening, and while we are super-proud of what he has done, I can’t help but realize that Joseph’s plaque has his Mom’s fingerprints all over it.

I have an incredible wife that God gave to me on May 10, 1997. Since then, the Lord has blessed us with three wonderful boys. I am also the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Polk City, Florida.
