To say that I am excited about our church’s upcoming Christmas musical would be an understatement.
When I accepted Mike Crook’s offer to take the lead role, I did so with serious doubts about my ability to memorize the enormous amount of lines that my character (Mr. Wiseman) says. But now, 3 weeks before our two performances, I’ve pretty much got the lines down and know the songs.
But, I really didn’t anticipate how fun it would be to act on stage. I’ve never done it before and I certainly may not do that good of a job on December 16, but I’m sure looking forward to it. It’s fun to step out of my “pastor” role and do something unexpected. It’s fun to step into a character’s shoes and try to portray him as someone the audience will enjoy.
My character is the hotel owner who refuses to acknowledge the hotel’s financial woes and spends much of his time doing magic tricks. But, his real purpose is to provide a helping hand to a pregnant, unwed teenager who is living on the streets. The story comes to a heartwarming conclusion that reminds us that Jesus’ arrival in our world enables us to have hope.
The following picture is the monologue that scared me to death when I told Mike “yes, I’ll do it.” It not only has to be memorized (I think I’ve finally got it), but it has to be timed just right so that “Silent Night” can begin on cue (music is playing in the background as I speak). Also, I’m supposed to say it in such a way that pulls the audience in and causes them to believe that it could pull at the heart strings of people to … oh, I don’t want to give a spoiler.
The challenge of tackling the lines and trying to fit into the role has been what has made getting ready for this drama so exciting! I love challenges when I don’t have immovable roadblocks in the way that virtually guarantee I cannot succeed.
