REFLECTIONS ON TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE(S):

When a man marries a woman, there is much more to it than meets the eye.

Lighting the unity candleOn May 10, 1997, I stood at the front of the worship center of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky. I will never forget enjoying the site of my wife being walked slowly down the aisle to meet me.

Within a few minutes, both of us said, “I do.” Our marriage had begun.

But, I didn’t simply pick Kim and she didn’t simply pick me.

As I took her for my wife, I realized that my God had graciously given her to me. He was smiling on me as I received His gift to me.

Proverbs 18:22 (CSB) “A man who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.”

IMG_3150That’s what our Verse for Today is all about. It’s a message to guys saying that we all need to realize that if we are blessed with a wife, she is God’s gift to us.

So, she is to be enjoyed and cherished. She is to be loved and treated with honor. As a precious gift from our Father, she needs to be treated as the wonderful God-given gift that she is.

While the wife is called to follow her husband’s loving leadership (Ephesians 5:22-24), the husband is commanded to sacrificially serve and love his wife even if it requires dying to himself daily to do so (Ephesians 5:25ff). He is called to selflessly sacrifice for her, something the Scripture never commands his wife to do.

Why should we lay down our life daily for our wife and love her unconditionally? Among other reasons, she is God’s gift to us. We have obtained favor from the Lord and He has smiled on us.

So, husbands, we’ve got work to do. Get busy.

Hands on Bible
Kim insisted that her bouquet included a Bible. While we are both far from God’s perfect standard of holiness, we desire more than anything to build our marriage on God’s principles. We have never, ever regretted that choice as we have progressed in our love for each other and our journey toward Christlikeness together.

I have an incredible wife that God gave to me on May 10, 1997. Since then, the Lord has blessed us with three wonderful boys. I am also the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Polk City, Florida.

    1. Marriage is the one treasure that God let Adam and Eve take with them when they were forced out of Eden. If Jesus is at the center of our marriage, it can be a little bit of Heaven on earth.
