Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):

God has called us to a holy life (1 Peter 1:16). In fact, if we don’t pursue holiness, we won’t spend eternity with Jesus because we’ve never truly been saved (Hebrews 12:14).

A pursuit of holiness is a clear sign that Jesus has taken up residence in our heart.

So, what is a primary means to obtain holiness? What one thing can we do to help us make progress on the road to becoming more like Jesus?

Get into your Bible! Scripture reading, Scripture meditation, and Scripture memory!

Psalm 119:11 (CSB): “I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.”

When we get God’s Word into our minds and hearts, we will be able to live holier lives and sin less.

But, how?! How does getting God’s Word into my mind and heart help me to sin less, thus growing in Christlikeness more?

Here are a few ways:

  1. Reading, meditating on, and memorizing God’s Word enables me to know what truth is (John 17:17). I cannot pursue a life of truth and holiness unless I know what truth and holiness is.
  2. As I develop an arsenal of truth claims (verses) from God’s Word, I am able to fight off temptation by attacking it with God’s Word (“the Sword of the Spirit”) as Jesus did (Matthew 4:1-11; Ephesians 6:17).
  3. As I develop a mind that is satisfied and hungers for God’s Word (Matthew 5:6), I will find my appetites for the world’s sinful pleasures decreasing.

Friend, we have a handful of resources to help us grow in our pursuit of becoming more like Jesus (becoming holy). Yet, none is greater than God’s Word, your Bible.

So read it.

Study it.

Reflect on it.

Memorize it.

Get it into your mind and heart and see how it will help you make incredible progress on your journey to Christlikeness.
