October 14: “Use Your Words to Bless Others”

3 Minute Read + Scripture readings

Today’s Bible Reading:

1 Kings 17
Colossians 4
Ezekiel 47
Psalms 103

Today’s Bible Verse(s):

Colossians 4:6 (CSB): “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.”

Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):

Our mouths, in relationship with all of the other parts of our body, is relatively small. Yet, the words that come out of our mouths are powerful.

Proverbs 15:4 (CSB): “The tongue that heals is a tree of life, but a devious tongue breaks the spirit.”

Proverbs 16:24 (CSB): “Pleasant words are a honeycomb: sweet to the taste and health to the body.”

Proverbs 18:21 (CSB): “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

These verses and more make it clear that the words that come out of our mouth can powerfully impact others. Our words can hurt someone deeply and it can lift their spirits. That’s why we are encouraged to use our words to bless others.

Colossians 4:6 (CSB): “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.”

In this verse, we are encouraged to make sure that our words should “always be gracious.” They should be pleasant and should cause others to feel good.

Further, our words should be “seasoned with salt.” Salt flavors and it prevents decay. So, our words should be pleasant and should be used to push back against the moral decay all around us.

Why not write down Colossians 4:6 on an index card right now, keep it with you today, reflect on it periodically throughout the day, and determine to say only the words that are approved.

Lord Jesus, I want to use my mouth for good and not evil. I realize that my words are powerful and I want to use them to bless and encourage others. Help me today as I focus on saying only what Colossians 4:6 allows. Amen.
