3 Minute Read

Prepare Your Heart

To the best of your ability, get rid of all distractions. Take a few minutes to breathe deeply and quiet yourself in the Lord’s presence. Then, ask the Lord to speak to you in this time. Let Him know that you will listen and make whatever adjustments He will reveal to you.

Read God’s Word

Genesis 4-5
Matthew 2:1-15

A Verse for Today

Slowly and reflectively read the following verse(s) and listen to what God will say to you through His written Word. Consider writing down any insights He reveals to you.

Genesis 5:21-24 (CSB): “Enoch was 65 years old when he fathered Methuselah. And after he fathered Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and fathered other sons and daughters. So Enoch’s life lasted 365 years. Enoch walked with God; then he was not there because God took him.”

Reflecting on God’s Word

When reading your Bible, pay attention if an author repeats a word or phrase. He’s dropping an obvious clue that the word or phrase is important.

In today’s reading, we see the words “Enoch walked with God,” and they appear twice in our text. While all of the other men in the list are simply given names and the ages at which they had their firstborn and then died, “Enoch walked with God.” This is what sets Enoch apart from everyone else in Genesis 5.

So, what does it mean to “walk with God?” We aren’t given this answer in Genesis 5. It seems that the author assumed we would know and that no such description was needed.

When we observe that Adam walked with God (Genesis 3:8), as did Noah (Genesis 6:9), we realize that walking with God means spending time with Him. It means to speak with Him, listen to Him, and enjoy Him.

In other words, all the other men in Genesis 5 may have been good people. But, they didn’t enjoy a relationship with God as Enoch did. He enjoyed His God, while the rest seemed to have merely been born, had kids, and died.

Which brings us to the question: How is our walk with God? Are we enjoying Him in the moments of our days? Are we spending sufficient time listening to Him in His Word? Are we looking for His fingerprints in the circumstances of each day? Are we spending time in heartfelt prayer to Him?

A wonderful, soul-satisfying relationship is offered to every child of God. Do you want it bad enough that you will pursue it? Why not choose right now to walk with God every single moment of this day? I can virtually guarantee that you will be glad you did.

Spend Time in Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for saving me. But I am also grateful that Your salvation includes the capability of enjoying You in each moment of my day. I desire to walk with You today. Please help me on this exciting adventure. In Your Name I pray, Amen.
