3 Minute Read
Prepare Your Heart
To the best of your ability, get rid of all distractions. Take a few minutes to breathe deeply and quiet yourself in the Lord’s presence. Then, ask the Lord to speak to you in this time. Let Him know that you will listen and make whatever adjustments He will reveal to you.
Read God’s Word
2 Kings 8-9
John 10:1-21
A Verse for Today
Slowly and reflectively read the following verse(s) and listen to what God will say to you through His written Word. Consider writing down any insights He reveals to you.
2 Kings 9:34-37 (CSB): “Then he went in, ate and drank, and said, ‘Take care of this cursed woman and bury her, since she’s a king’s daughter.’ But when they went out to bury her, they did not find anything but the skull, the feet, and the hands. So they went back and told him, and he said, ‘This fulfills the LORD’s word that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: “In the plot of land at Jezreel, the dogs will eat Jezebel’s flesh. Jezebel’s corpse will be like manure on the surface of the ground in the plot of land at Jezreel so that no one will be able to say: This is Jezebel.” ‘ “
Reflecting on God’s Word
For today’s devotional article, I’m going to do something quite a bit different. I’m going to share the link to a 56-minute sermon that I think will bless you.
R.G. Lee pastored Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, from 1927-1960. During that time, he became known for one of the sermons he first preached as a young pastor in South Carolina. The sermon was so engaging and applicable that R.G. Lee was asked to preach it over 1,200 times in his lifetime.
The sermon is about how Ahab and Jezebel committed unspeakable atrocities, specifically in how they murdered Naboth, and seemed to get away with it. But the sermon focuses on how divine judgment takes place and how every evil act will be accounted for.
The audio/video is of inferior quality, so you will need to focus a bit more to pay attention and listen. Further, R.G. Lee was brilliant and had a vast vocabulary, so you will need to keep your mind engaged.
On that last point, Pastor Adrian Rogers was called as pastor of Bellevue in 1972. In a conversation he had with R.G. Lee, he said: “I wish that I could put your brain into my body.” R.G. Lee is reported to have said in jest: “That would be like putting a grand piano in a broom closet.”
So, even though the following sermon is somewhat lengthy and requires you to focus quite a bit, I believe you will be blessed if you watch it to the end.
Spend Time in Prayer
- Ask God to help you not hold onto the injustices that others have done to you.
- Ask God to help you rest in the truth of Romans 12:18-21 and let God be the “judge, jury, and executioner” of those who have done evil to you.
Going Deeper
If you want to dig a little deeper into Naboth and the divine judgement that led to Ahab’s and Jezebel’s deaths, consider reading the following GotQuestions article:
