2 Minute Read
Prepare Your Heart
To the best of your ability, get rid of all distractions. Take a few minutes to breathe deeply and quiet yourself in the Lord’s presence. Then, ask the Lord to speak to you in this time. Let Him know that you will listen and make whatever adjustments He will reveal to you.
Read God’s Word
2 Chronicles 1-3
Acts 2:37-3:10
A Verse for Today
Slowly and reflectively read the following verse(s) and listen to what God will say to you through His written Word. Consider writing down any insights He reveals to you.
Acts 2:23 (CSB): “Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.”
Reflecting on God’s Word
I probably talk about the tension between God’s sovereignty and mankind’s free will a bit too much. But it’s only because I’ve heard so many debates and arguments about it. And it is my observation that most of the debate occurs because people tend to camp out on one side or the other.
I have come to believe and understand God’s sovereignty and mankind’s free will as a paradox. It would seem that each one would cancel out the other. And yet the Bible teaches them both.
The verse I have chosen for today demonstrates my point beautifully. Look at how God sovereignly accomplished His purpose while mankind freely did what they wanted to do.
Acts 2:23 (CSB): “Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge (God’s sovereignty), you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him (Mankind’s free will).” (emphasis mine)
We could certainly go deeper into this topic. We could discuss how God must graciously work in a sinner’s heart before that sinner will choose Him. But the point remains that God does whatever God desires to do, and mankind has the ability to choose within His realm of options.
So, don’t get into arguments about the tension between God’s free will and our free will. Realize that the Bible teaches them both.
Spend Time in Prayer
- Ask God to help you find comfort and rest in His sovereignty.
- Ask God to help you take your responsibilities and choices seriously.
