In my 40s, I got into running and wanted to see how far I could take that sport. I ran in dozens and dozens of 5Ks, and a few half-marathons. Then, my knees started giving me trouble, and I had to stop.
I started gaining weight, so I went back to weight training, something I have done off and on since high school. I want to see how far I can take this “sport” until old age tells me that I have reached as far as I can go and need to back off.
A couple of years ago, I purchased Michael Matthews’ book, “Bigger Leaner Stronger,” and have been (generally) applying the principles he outlined regarding weight training. So, I’ve really only seriously been working out for a little over two years.
Two years ago, the week I purchased that book, I was bench pressing well below 200lbs. Today, I solidified my place above 300lbs. For the second time this week, I bench pressed over 300lbs on my 3rd set. Today’s third set was 315lbs.

The principle I used to achieve this is NOT to focus on a final goal. Instead, I have focused on a general goal (seeing how far I can go) and have spent MUCH more time focusing on a weekly goal of making small gains each week. Each week, I have tried to do at least one more rep than the week before, or add another 5lb to the bar.
This principle applies to so many areas of life. Looking at where we are and where we think we should be can be daunting and debilitating. But focusing on just being a little better than last week can enable us to make massive gains, given enough time.
But I am also being reminded that the Lord hasn’t made us to live independently of others. He modeled this by sending out His Apostles in twos (not ones), and then left us His Church (a community of believers). We work best when we live in community with others. And that’s where losing the unhealthy weight I have gained comes in. I have secured a Christian coach and am now looking forward to gaining control of this area as I walk alongside a guy who has already walked this road.
Anyway, I hope this doesn’t come across as bragging. I’m just trying to be a bit vulnerable and share some lessons I’m learning in hopes of encouraging others. Don’t feel bad about how far you have to go in any area of your life. Just rely upon the Lord and try to do a bit better than you did last week. In a few years, you won’t believe what He can do in and through you.
