A Misunderstood, Misapplied Promise About Temptation

Have you ever heard someone say, “I know the Bible says that God won’t give us more than we can handle …”?

Of course you have. We all have. Maybe we’ve even said it.

It is often used when life gets really tough and the person is beginning to feel squashed by the pressure.

DARE: I challenge you to find that verse in the Bible. However, please don’t allocate too much time to find it because that time will be wasted.

SPOILER ALERT: It’s not in the Bible.

The verse that has been rewritten and misapplied is …

1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV) “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

This verse doesn’t speak about life’s difficulties. It talks about temptations to sin.

If we rewrite and then misapply Scripture, we will come to doubt it’s veracity or potency. It is only when we properly interpret and apply Scripture that we are free to experience it’s power.
