REFLECTIONS ON TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE(S):

If we really believe that there is a Hell and a holy God who will send people there who have rejected (or not heard of) His Son, then we need to be sharing the Gospel.

At each of the three churches that I have pastored, I have provided Gospel training. In my first congregation, I simply taught on how to share the Gospel. In my second church, I used the “Evangelism Explosion” curriculum. In my current congregation, we have spent over 20 weeks of training as we used the “Way of the Master” curriculum.

I am also sold on evangelism. Of course, as a pastor, I get to share the Gospel with folks who come for counseling. But, I enjoyed going door-to-door with Phillip Peeler last year as we knocked on the doors of about 100 homes in the neighborhoods surrounding our church campus. As his medical condition improves, we plan to resume our door-to-door visitation / evangelism in a couple of weeks.

Further, I’ve led my current congregation to partner with a new church in Denver, Colorado. We began our partnership with them a few years ago and they have shared the Gospel and baptized many people since then. I have also led our church to solidify a partnership with a church in Jalapa, Guatemala that is also doing a great job of evangelizing their community.

So, obviously, I’m convinced that the church should be the place where people are trained in how to share the Gospel. Further, I am convinced that a church should provide opportunities for people to share their faith in their “Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

But, our Verse for Today makes it clear that evangelism is a partnership between us and God. We have a part … but we rely upon God to do His part.

Luke 10:2 (CSB): “He told them, ‘The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.'”

While we train people for evangelism and provide opportunities for them to evangelize, we realize that our sovereign God is reigning over all things. It is to Him that our prayers go up, specifically to provide people who will go out to share the Gospel.

This is the paradox of the Christian experience. There is God’s part and our part. One without the other will not get the job done.

We must pray that God would call out people who will share His wonderful Good News with a lost, sin-sick world. But, we must also train the called and provide opportunities for them to do what God has called them to do.

If your church is not an evangelizing church, these three areas provide the three big areas in which to begin your diagnosis of the problem.

  • Is your church praying for God to call out Christians who are convinced that Christians must share their faith?
  • Is your church training the called?
  • Is your church providing opportunities for the trained called to share the Gospel?

If not, bring these matters to the attention of your church leadership. Work with them for the health and growth of your congregation through evangelism.

Luke 10:2 (CSB): “He told them, ‘The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.'”
