Today’s Bible Verse(s):
“It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:26-28 (CSB)
Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):
Do you want to be great? That sounds like a very bad question intended for spiritually immature people, doesn’t it?
But that is because we may have grown up in a household or church that meant well but they convinced us that Christians shouldn’t strive for greatness. They equate striving for greatness with sin.
Yet, in our Verse for Today, Jesus gives instructions to His disciples who wanted to be great. He didn’t reprimand them for their desire for greatness. He simply said that if they wanted to be great, they were going about it the wrong way.
To be great in God’s eyes, and to live in such a way that we gain His overwhelming approval on Judgment Day, we need to strive for greatness by serving others.
Read our Verses for Today again and consider writing them down so that you can take them with you today. Ask the Lord to help you live out the truth found in Jesus’ words as you follow the example He left for His followers.
Matthew 20:26-28 (CSB): “It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Lord Jesus, I want to be great. I want my life to count. I want to get to the end of my life and realize that I made a difference in the lives of so many people. In our Verses for Today, You tell me that I am to focus on following Your example by serving others. Please teach me to swallow my pride, to embrace humility, to give up my rights, to serve others, and strive for Your affirmation. Amen.
