10 Bible Passages to Combat Anxiety

If I am fearful and anxious, it didn’t come from God. Instead, He offers me the mental habits of a confident, happy, peaceful life.

2 Timothy 1:7 (CSB): “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.”

 

I will pray instead of worrying so that I can experience God’s peace.

Philippians 4:6-7 (CSB): “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

 

I can take all of my worries to the Lord because He cares for me.

1 Peter 5:6-7 (CSB): “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.”

 

Regardless of how difficult things get, Jesus is coming for me one day and I will dwell with Him in Heaven forever.

John 14:1-3 (CSB): “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.”

 

I have the confidence that I can do anything Jesus wants me to do because He is in me and empowers me.

Philippians 4:13 (CSB): “I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.”

 

Jesus is watching and assisting me every moment of the day. No one can do anything to me unless He allows it.

Hebrews 13:6 (CSB): “Therefore, we may boldly say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?’”

 

Even if it is God’s will for me to suffer, He will graciously give me a reprieve afterwards. If that reprieve doesn’t happen in this life, it awaits me in Heaven.

1 Peter 5:10 (CSB): “The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little while.”

 

As I pursue righteousness, I can rest in the fact that the Lord is free to run to my aid when I cry out to Him.

Psalm 34:14-15 (CSB): “Turn away from evil and do what is good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry for help.”

 

I shouldn’t worry because I am valuable to King Jesus. Besides, worrying doesn’t accomplish anything productive. I must spend my time focused on what is important to King Jesus and He will focus on what is important to me.

Matthew 6:25-34 (CSB): “Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you—you of little faith? So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

 

I can be strong and courageous (rather than anxious) because 1) the Lord has given me promises in His Word that I can claim, 2) the Lord will bless me as I am fully obedient to His Word, and 3) the Lord will be with me every moment of each day.

Joshua 1:6-9 (CSB): “Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an inheritance. Above all, be strong and very courageous to observe carefully the whole instruction my servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go. This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
