Fear and anxiety have escalated this year. Troubling things are taking place around us (along with our own troubles within us) that cries out for our attention. But, if we listen to those cries and allow those troubling things to consume us, we will sink into discouragement, anxiety, and fear … or worse.

So with a desire to encourage the wonderful folks of the church that I pastor at the First Baptist Church of Polk City, Florida, I focused our attention on the story of Jesus and Peter walking on the water (Matthew 14:22-33). I explained that the story reveals a powerful, encouraging picture of how we are to acknowledge the difficulties of life without allowing them to sink us.
