Today’s Bible Reading:
1 Chronicles 7-8
Today’s Bible Verse(s):
Hebrews 11:5 (CSB): “By faith Enoch was taken away, and so he did not experience death. He was not to be found because God took him away. For before he was taken away, he was approved as one who pleased God.”
Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):
Very little is said about Enoch. In Hebrews 11, he gets one verse. In Genesis 5, he received four verses.
Genesis 5:21-24 (CSB): “Enoch was 65 years old when he fathered Methuselah. And after he fathered Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and fathered other sons and daughters. So Enoch’s life lasted 365 years. Enoch walked with God; then he was not there because God took him.”
Only 5 verses! But those 5 verses are rich! They provide us with enough biblical, devotional truth that we could enjoy reflecting on them for a very long time.
Essentially, we learn in Hebrews 11 that Enoch didn’t die. God simply took him to Heaven without allowing him to go through the dying process. But, we also learn that in his life, he “pleased God.” He made God happy!
When we look back to Genesis 5, we learn again that Enoch simply ceased to exist on earth because “God took him.”
And we see a special phrase that is used twice: “Enoch walked with God.”
So, when we put all of this together, we learn that Enoch was a man that enjoyed living each day with His God (“walked with him”). He was able to enjoy God in the moments of his days because he exercised faith (Hebrews 11:6 directly follows the verse on Enoch). And, as Enoch lived a life of faith, enjoying his God, God also found favor in him. He made God happy.
Friend, Christianity is a whole lot more than obeying rules. In fact, it’s really not about obeying rules. Sure, we do what God has told us to do but we don’t do it to please Him. We obey Him because we love Him and delight to do what He has told us to do. But, it’s really about the relationship.
Are you enjoying a relationship with your God? Can it be said that you are “walking with God?” Why not choose to walk with Him today?

Lord Jesus, I want to walk with You. I want to experience the joy of living each moment with an awareness that You are in that moment with me. I want to live in obedience to Your Word but I want my motivation to be based upon my love relationship with my God, not some lifeless compulsion to obey rules. I want to experience the joy of relationship with my God just as You and the Father enjoy each other (John 17:21). I pray this in Your Name. Amen.
