When Jesus said, “you will have trouble in this world,” He wasn’t kidding. It was true in the first century and it is true in the 21st century.
Sometimes, the trouble is persecution. Sometimes, the trouble is a virus that has turned into a pandemic. Sometimes the trouble is a health problem. The possibilities are endless.
We live in a Genesis 3, broken world and bad things happen. We’re going to have trouble.
So, how should a Jesus-follower think about suffering? What should our response be?
While we are realists and acknowledge that suffering stinks, we also realize that our suffering is inflicted by an enemy that has been defeated. Death has lost its sting and the grave has lost its victory. Why? Because Jesus went to the cross, died to pay the sin debt of everyone who will trust in Him, and then rose from the dead three days later to conquer death.
So, while we presently suffer, it is only for a little while longer. Sooner than we may realize, we’re going to say ‘good-bye’ to this world and say ‘hello’ to Jesus. We’re going to enjoy being in His presence on the New Earth forever and ever.
Will life be tough tomorrow? Sure, it might be. But, you’re not home yet, friend. Jesus defeated sin and death and you only have to deal with its presence and consequences a little while longer. Soon and very soon, we’re going to see the King!

Lord Jesus, thank You so much that You have conquered the world. My current suffering is not the end of the story. It’s only a temporary reality. Soon and very soon, I’m going to be with You forever. I can’t wait! So help me to live in victory even as I walk through difficult times. Let me demonstrate that following You makes a huge difference in how I think and live. But I can’t wait to be with You forever. So I join the Apostle John when he said in the last few verses of the Bible, “Even so come Lord Jesus!” Amen.
