5 Minute Read

Be Still

To the best of your ability, get rid of all distractions. Take a couple of minutes to breathe deeply, to quiet yourself in the Lord’s presence. Then, prayerfully ask the Lord to speak to you in this time and let Him know that you will be listening and will make whatever adjustments He will reveal to you.

Today’s Bible Reading:

1 Chronicles 12:19–14:17
Romans 1:1-17
Psalm 9:13-20
Proverbs 19:4-5

Listen to the Lord

Slowly and reflectively read the following verses and listen to what God will say to you through them. Then, consider writing down any insights He reveals to you.

1 Chronicles 13:8 (NLT): “David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.”

Reflections from Scripture:

A little over a month ago, I went with my family to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburgh, Florida, to watch the Tampa Bay Rays play baseball. Of course, we weren’t allowed on the field; we could only sit in the stands. Yet, from our perspective as spectators, there were times when we applauded wildly and yelled in celebration at an incredible play.

Imagine that you are sitting in the stands and are about to watch your favorite team. Imagine that you are told that you cannot say a word when they make an incredible play. Further, you cannot applaud or stand and cheer. Instead, you have to sit quietly through the whole game. If you are a true sports fan, you will protest such restrictions. You realize that cheering increases your joy. Celebrating wildly in the stands makes the game even more fun.

This is how we are to understand how David worshiped the Lord. He didn’t sit quietly. Instead, he celebrated with every ounce of energy he had. In doing so, he was able to enjoy the Lord so much more.

1 Chronicles 13:8 (NLT): “David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.”

Do you enjoy the Lord? Does your heart crave to be satisfied in Him just like a deer searching for a stream to quench its thirst (Psalm 42:1-2)? In what ways could you respond to the Lord that would increase the happiness you already have in Him?

Spend Time in Prayer

Lord Jesus, I know that I love You because You first loved me. I know that I enjoy my time with You. Yet, if there is a way to increase my joy in Your presence, help me see what that is. I don’t want to be a passive spectator but an active worshipper. I pray this in Your Name, Amen.
