I can’t remember when I first watched the movie “Field of Dreams” (1989), but I never forgot it. It did a beautiful job evoking the nostalgia of American baseball in a magical way that captured the audience’s emotions, particularly those who love baseball. It’s the kind of movie that baseball fans wouldn’t mind watching over and over.
The following 4:44-minute movie clip captures the movie’s mystery and nostalgia. (I apologize in advance for the curse word at the very end of the following video. To avoid it, just hit “stop” promptly at the 4:30 mark.)
The power of this movie is why I’m not surprised that the movie set (in Dyersville, Iowa) has been maintained and remains a destination for 65,000-100,000 visitors each year.
According to the Field of Dreams website: “Visitors can walk the iconic diamond nestled in the cornfields, tour the original farmhouse, and play catch with legendary Ghost Players. From youth tournaments to seasonal events, every experience is steeped in nostalgia. Whether you’re reliving cherished memories or creating new ones, the Field of Dreams offers a timeless escape into the magic of the movies and the national pastime.”
Unfortunately, the parking lot was packed when we arrived. We discovered that a couple of Little League baseball games were being played on the field, and we would not be allowed on it during the games.
I was slightly bummed because I wanted to toss a baseball with Kim on the field just to say I did it. But the only thing I was able to do was get a few pictures.

“If you build it, they will come.”
After spending about 30 minutes here, we got back on the interstate and headed west again. The next cool place we would explore was Badlands National Park in South Dakota.
