TODAY’S BIBLE READING:
TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE(S):
Ezekiel 33:11 (ESV) “Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?”
REFLECTIONS ON TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE(S):
As we read through the Bible, we cannot help but realize that God loathes sin. And, as we continue to read, we also cannot help but realize that God is just and must punish sin (Exodus 34:7; Numbers 14:8; Nahum 1:3; etc.).
Yet, if we are not careful, we may come to the erroneous conclusion that God delights in punishing the wicked sinner. We may assume that it gives Him pleasure to send the wicked off to their eternal doom in Hell.
But, that’s where our Verse for Today informs and corrects us. Our God loves His creation. He loves the people of the world. While He finds delight in exercising justice, He find no pleasure in sending someone to an eternity in Hell. He would much rather have them turn from their sin and turn to Him.
“Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?” (Ezekiel 33:11)
But, how does God warn the wicked? How does He call them back? Friend, that’s your and my job. He wants us to be His mouthpiece to call people to the cross of Jesus where they can be forgiven and cleansed.
And this is no small matter. As I bring this post to its end, let me share what God says about how responsible we are to call sinners from their sin and to Him. We have been given the Gospel. Are we sharing it?
Ezekiel 33:7-9 (ESV)
“So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.”
