TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE(S):

Daniel 3:17-18 (ESV) “If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

REFLECTIONS ON TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE(S):

I love the words of our Verses for Today. They were spoken by three Hebrew men who had previously been told that anyone who didn’t bow down to the golden statue would be thrown into a fiery furnace and burned to death.

Yet, their devotion to their God was so strong that they would rather be killed than bow in reverence to anyone or anything other than their God.

So the words of our Verses for Today are words of unimaginable courage. They are words that would have guaranteed that these men would immediately be killed. And yet they were willing to face that very real possibility.

“If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” (Daniel 3:17-18)

While they acknowledged that their God was powerful enough to save them from the death sentence, He might not demonstrate that power. They might be killed. But they would rather die than give their allegiance to anything other than their God.

We can sit back and admire the courage of these men but God’s Word is intended for our benefit and spiritual growth. It’s not simply a compilation of good stories – those stories have application for us.

When I look at this story, I can’t help but see how loyal those men were to their God and how determined they were not to put anything before Him.

And then I look at myself and wonder if I am bowing down to any gods.

  • Living to satisfy my fleshly appetites (Philippians 3:19)
  • Wanting more than I’ve got (Colossians 3:5)
  • Etc., etc., etc.

There is an endless possibility of idols that we could worship instead of giving our full allegiance to our God. So instead of bowing to those idols, resolve to be like the three men in our Verses for Today who would rather die than worship anyone or anything other than their God.
