REFLECTIONS ON TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE(S):

Our Verse for Today is one of the classic texts on the nature of Scripture. It tells us how the Bible was written.

Was the Bible written by men? Of course. If we count correctly, there were about 40 men who wrote the books and letters that are accepted as Scripture. And they wrote over a period of about 1,500 years.

But, if it was written by men, how can we believe that it is without error in the original writings? Men make mistakes so how can we believe in “the inerrancy of Scripture? And how can we explain the incredible unity of the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation?”

Simply re-read our Verse for Today for the answer…

“For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:21)

We believe that while God used about 40 men to write the Scriptures, those men were not left to themselves to write it. They were “carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

We understand that to mean that while those men wrote out of their own experiences and used their own personal grammatical styles, the Holy Spirit was working in the background to lead them to write what He desired. He made sure that what they wrote was without error in any form whatsoever.

So, we can say that 40 men wrote the Bible. But, we could just as rightly say that the Bible has one author – God.

Because of this, the Bible is like no other book ever written. Those who spend much time with it, studying its content, cannot help but realize that it would have been impossible for 40 men, writing over a period of about 1,500 years, to write a book that is so unified in its teachings and purpose and without error. Believing that God is the ultimate Author of the Book is not a stretch at all to those who will spend time with it.

So, friend, commit to spending much time in your Bibles each day. And enjoy the experience!
