Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):

When we look at the story surrounding Ezra 8:23, we realize that Ezra was preparing to make a long journey to Israel. It was a dangerous journey. He realized that a viable option would be to ask the King of Persia for military protection. However, Ezra realized that if he asked for protection, the Persian King might rightfully ask the question: “If the God of Israel is as powerful as you say He is, why do you need military protection?” So, Ezra refused to ask for protection and, instead, “fasted and pleaded with (his) God about this.” The end result? Ezra made the trip safely, without incident.

Friend, God is no less powerful today than He was back then. But, when we pray so little, we demonstrate that we really don’t believe that God is powerful and that prayer actually works.

Why not commit to being more intentional about prayer this year? Why not do some studying in your Bible about fasting and how it helps to focus your prayers and make them more powerful?

Friend, if you are saved, you serve a powerful God who delights to hear and answer your prayers. You have more resources at your disposal than you may have ever realized. So, as you go through this day and the days that follow, develop the confidence in God that comes with knowing that He’s only a prayer away … and then spend time in prayer.

Lord Jesus, thank You for all that You have done to make my prayers pleasing to the Father. I ask for Your forgiveness in not spending any more time in prayer than I have. Enabled by the grace You will send my way, I will spend time communicating with my Heavenly Father as I walk through the moments of this day. I look forward to the joy it brings to my heart. Amen.
