Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):
The verse that I have chosen for today is a theme that I have highlighted more than a few times so far this year. It is the biblical view of who’s in charge.
If you will go back to look at Joseph’s words, you will see that he acknowledged that his brothers were engaged in an act that was clearly evil when they wanted to kill him but, instead, sold him into slavery. It was a horrid sin! It violated their consciences, the law of God written on their hearts. They knew it was wrong when they did it.
Yet, the God of Heaven is so infinitely powerful and infinitely sovereign that it was also rightly said that He was actively working in and through their actions to accomplish His good purposes.
Genesis 50:20 (CSB): “You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result — the survival of many people.”
Absolutely nothing can happen unless God actively wills something to happen or passively allows something to happen. Every single thing that happens to us has to pass through God’s hands before it gets to us.
This is called a paradox – when two things are presented as truth that would seem to contradict each other. Yet, we must believe both because: 1) the Bible presents them both as truth, and 2) it must be so if mankind truly has a free-will and God sovereignly reigns over His creation.
So, what’s the application?
Simply that no matter what happens to you today, friend, and no matter who does it to you, it had to pass through God’s hands first. The good, the bad, and the ugly had to get His OK before it got to You.
Further, you have His promise that He loves you. Further, whatever He sends your way is intended for your ultimate good, to make you more like Jesus.
Romans 8:28–29 (CSB): “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”
With that being the case, see every single thing that happens to you today (good and bad) as a gift from God to help you on the road to becoming more Christlike.

Lord Jesus, I don’t think of You nearly enough. I am saddened when I think of all that You have done for me when I consider how frequently I can go about my days without so much as a passing thought of You. As I determine to focus more upon You in the moments of this day, help me to do so. And when something that I perceive to be “bad” happens, help me to see that it had to pass through Your hands before it got to me. Help me to realize that it is a gift from You to help me to become more like You. Amen.
