Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):

When our three sons were much younger, there were plenty of times when they were buckled into their back seats as Kim or I drove to a destination. Sometimes Kim and I grew stressed because of the driving conditions. Sometimes the amount of vehicles on the road was overwhelming. Sometimes it was rain or snow that made the roads very, very slippery.

But, while we were stressed, our boys weren’t. As they played in the backseat, we often had to quiet them down because they simply couldn’t appreciate the seriousness of the moment.

Why weren’t they stressed like we were? Well, a big reason is because they trusted us. They didn’t have a care in the world because their Dad and Mom could handle it.

That is the same sort of sentiment that we see in Psalm 31:24.

Psalm 31:24 (CSB): “Be strong, and let your heart be courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord.”

Friend, God isn’t like Kim and me. He doesn’t stress when life gets rough. He’s calm, cool, and collected and He is actively reigning over every single detail. Absolutely nothing is out of His control. So, our hope, our trust in Him is well placed.

How do we know that we are trusting the Lord? We could answer that question by asking a couple more questions:

  • Is our heart at rest, even as the storms around us rage?
  • Are we strong and courageous, knowing that our God will equip and empower us for any task He leads us to?

Friend, life is too hard for us to handle. God never intended for us to do it on our own. He  has always intended for us to live live while enjoy Him and trust in Him and His provision. So, trust Him in the moments of your days. See if it doesn’t also put a smile on your face.

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Lord Jesus, I have realized that when I get anxious, it is in those moments when I’m not fully trusting You. I long to feel that ‘care-free spirit’ that I once felt as a child who trusted my parents. I am reminded of that storm on the Sea of Galilee that sent the disciples into a state of terror because they didn’t trust the You, as Jesus slept because He placed Himself into Your care. I even remember that Jesus rebuked those untrusting disciples after He calmed the storm. Help me to be more like You, Jesus, and to trust You more. Amen.
