6 Minute Read + Scripture readings
Today’s Bible Reading:
Today’s Bible Verse(s):
Psalm 119:92–93 (CSB): “If your instruction had not been my delight, I would have died in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, for you have given me life through them.”
Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):
There have been plenty of seasons in my life when I spent time in God’s Word … and found it to be boring.
There, I said it. I expressed what so many Christians often feel.
But, let me finish …
As I look back over the roller-coaster ride of my Christian life, I have noticed that one clear indicator of the condition of my heart is how much I am enjoying God’s Word.
Stated another way, if I am really enjoying my time in my Bible, that indicates to me that my spiritual life is at least reasonably healthy. But, if my time in God’s Word has become boring and lifeless, that’s generally an indicator that my heart has some spiritual problems.
Listen again to the verses that I have chosen for today and see if you can determine the condition of the Psalmist’s heart.
Psalm 119:92–93 (CSB): “If your instruction had not been my delight, I would have died in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, for you have given me life through them.”
Clearly, the Psalmist was delighting in God’s Word. He said that he wouldn’t dare forget God’s Word because he knew that as he reflected on it, it gave him life, even in the midst of affliction (tough circumstances or difficult people).
Let’s cheat a little bit and look at the verse that will begin our readings in Psalms tomorrow.
Psalm 119:97 (CSB): “How I love your instruction! It is my meditation all day long.”
What about you, friend? Do you love reading God’s Word? Do you recognize it as a source of life as you read it, and study it, and meditate on it?
If not, it could be that there are some unhealthy things going on in your mind and heart. Ask God to reveal what those things are.
- Maybe there is a sin (or sins) to confess and turn from.
- Maybe you have forgotten that God’s Word is essentially a love letter to you, His dear child.
- Maybe you have forgotten that God’s Word is given so that you have what you need to live a godly life.
- Or, maybe you’re simply going through a difficult passage of Scripture (The genealogies don’t generally bring a warm feeling to my heart.)
Whatever it is, realize that there have been men and women that have thoroughly enjoyed reading God’s Word. They realized that it was a source of great delight for them.
That same happiness awaits you. Will you make the adjustments to experience that happiness? I sure hope you will.

Lord Jesus, You have given me Your Word. While it is for my instruction, it is also intended for my delight. I can actually crave the happiness that I can only get as I’m spending time in Your Word. Help me to listen to You speak to me through my time in Your Word so that I can respond appropriately and enjoy the experience. Amen.
