January 8: “The Golden Rule”

Genesis 18:16–19:38
Matthew 6:25–7:14
Psalm 8:1-9
Proverbs 2:6-15

Matthew 7:12 (CSB) “Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

Our Verse for Today is often called the Golden Rule. It is the one rule (alongside the command to love God and others) that is at the root of what God has commanded in His Word. Every command springs from the Golden Rule and the commands to love God and love others (Matthew 22:37-40).

So, what does the Golden Rule call us to do?

Simply treat others the way we want to be treated.

  • When you hurt someone, you want to be forgiven. So, forgive those who hurt you.
  • When you are in need, you want others to help you out. So, help those who are in need.
  • When you feel unloved, you want someone to step into your life to show compassion. So, show compassion to others.
  • When you feel discouraged, you want someone to encourage you. So, encourage others.

On and on we could go. The principle is simple. Treat others the way you want them to treat you.

So, today, keep this Golden Rule in mind. Think of how you want to be treated. Then, treat others that way.

It’s a very simple rule that could make a very powerful, profound impact on those around you.
