Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):

Some Christians are stuck in discouragement. They are simply living day-to-day without a sense of purpose. They are trusting in Jesus as their Lord and Savior so they know they are going to Heaven but they just don’t know how the Gospel translates into their daily lives.

Well, my friend, the Gospel is so amazing that it can be applied in a thousand ways to our daily activities. But, let me share one application with you. It’s simply this – everything you do for the Lord (with the desire to gain His approval) is laying up treasures for you to enjoy in Heaven.

Some folks think that we should serve the Lord simply because it’s the right thing to do. While there is nothing necessarily wrong with that, Jesus has given us yet more motivation to serve Him. It’s found in Matthew 6!

In Matthew 6:20, Jesus tells us to live in such a way that we are laying up treasures in Heaven. That verse makes it crystal clear that there are things that we can do today that will gain us rewards in Heaven that we can enjoy forever.

In fact, I want to give you an assignment. Read Matthew 6:1-21 and circle the word “reward” every time you see it. I counted seven times! Jesus wants us to gain eternal rewards as we live for Him!

Friend, your daily life has purpose. Every time you do something for the Lord with a desire to gain His approval (and not the approval of people around you), you are laying up treasures/rewards in Heaven.

So, live this day for Jesus. Do the things He’s told you to do. Do those things with a desire to gain His, and only His, approval. And then let a smile form as you think about the rewards that you have gained in Heaven that you will enjoy one day.

Lord Jesus, thank You for giving us yet another reason to serve You. Thank You that my activities this day have purpose and can be used to gain eternal rewards that I can enjoy when I arrive in my Heavenly home one day. But, even as I gain rewards for what I do, I pray that my primary motive would always be to serve you out of love and with gratitude for what You’ve done for me. Help me to see the rewards as just an added benefit. Amen.
