Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):

What is time?

I didn’t ask “What time is it?” I asked “What is time?”

While it seems at first glance to be a very easy question to answer, it is incredibly difficult when we attempt our response. But, it seems to me that time is a progression of events from the past, into the present, and then into the future.

Then we ask ourselves the question: “What is eternity?” It seems to me that a very, very simplistic answer would be that eternity is infinite time. It is an endless progression of events that never had a beginning and will never have an ending.

Why would I bring up a topic like this before you’ve probably had your second cup of coffee? Because Psalm 90 brings these issues up. In this chapter, we observe the infinity of God and the finitude of mankind. God has no beginning or ending while we have a definite beginning and a time in which we die. God exists in eternity while we exist in space and time.

Psalm 90:2 (CSB): Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, you are God.

Psalm 90:10 (CSB): “Our lives last seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away.”

God had no beginning and God has no ending. He is “from eternity to eternity.” Yet, we live in space and time for, on average, “seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years” and then die.

So, we had a definite beginning (we have not existed for all eternity).

But, when we die, is it all over? Our lives don’t extend into eternity past like God, so will our lives extend into eternity future with God?

Yes!

Matthew 25:46 (CSB): “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Friend, there was a definite time when you came to life. You were conceived and your spirit came into existence. But, while you have not existed for all of eternity past, you will exist for all of eternity future. When you breathe your last breath on planet earth, you will step into eternity where you will live forever and ever and ever.

I sure hope that you know for absolute certainty that you are headed for Heaven because the only other option is Hell. And your will be there forever, without end.

Lord Jesus, thank You that while You have lived forever, You have brought me into being and I will live forever. Thank You that I am trusting in You and will live forever with You in Heaven. I pray for those who have not yet trusted in You to do so before they walk through death’s door and it becomes too late. Amen.
