Reflections on Today’s Bible Verse(s):
We all know what fear is. And we know what it’s like to be afraid. We’ve felt it plenty of times before.
Yet, the verse I have chosen says that there are certain people who don’t fear bad news. It doesn’t say that bad things won’t happen. It simply tells us that there are people who aren’t afraid of hearing bad news. The verse also tells us why they can be so courageous.
The righteous person doesn’t fear bad news because “his heart is confident.” He’s got internal strength.
But where does that internal strength come from? It comes from the fact that he is “trusting in the Lord.”
To say that we are believing in the Lord is good but it doesn’t necessarily give us confidence. It’s when we trust in Him that we can relax and not be thrown into a state of fear when we hear bad news.
Why does trusting in the Lord give us confidence?
Well, just imagine that you’re a parent and your children are toddlers. You are driving on the interstate with them in the back seat when a massive thunderstorm forms overhead. Rain is pounding the car and road. Lightening is flashing and thunder is deafening.
Your children look up to you with fear in their eyes. But, as you look at them in the rearview mirror, you tell them, “Hey, kids. You can relax. Daddy (or Mommy) has got this. I love thunderstorms and this one is a beauty. We’re going to be just fine. I’m having fun driving.”
If your kids don’t trust you, they will continue to be scared. But, if they trust you, the thunderstorm can continue but they will be just fine.
Similarly, if we really do trust the Lord, if we rest in the fact that He is fully sovereign (in control), that He loves us, and that nothing can happen to us without it going through His hands first, then we can be confident. Even news that might seem “bad” isn’t overwhelming because we trust the One who allowed it to happen.
Do you want to develop confidence? Then learn to trust in the Lord. Find your strength and courage in Him (Joshua 1:6-9).

Lord Jesus, I don’t want to be satisfied that I have believed in You for salvation. I want to trust in You every moment of every day. I want to experience the courage and confidence that comes from resting in You. I pray this in Your Name. Amen.
